1 Star Wars "Who Would Win" Game on Thu Mar 26, 2015 5:20 pm

So for fun I thought we could do a thing where we tally up all the 'best' (subjective) Force-users and otherwise across Star Wars' varied history and then do a tourney style vote thing amongst ourselves to see who'd win against whom, and figure out who is the 'strongest' person in Star Wars by popular vote.  I mention it because as I've noted many times in real life and on stream, who is stronger or more skilled than whom in Star Wars is incredibly subjective (I believe by design in most cases) so it's fascinating to see people have their own perspectives on such a thing.  Plus I've been dying to use this Tourney scheduler thing for a while now.  So what do you say guys, who'd want to do this with me?

Edit: Current List As Follows

Emperor Palpatine
Darth Vader
Anakin Skywalker
Luke Skywalker
Obi-Wan Kenobi
Boba Fett
Cad Bane
Mace Windu
Yoda
Darth Tyranus / Count Dooku
Ashoka
Quinlen Vos
Jacen Solo
Kyle Katarn
Darth Scion
Darth Nihilus
Darth Kreia
Darth Thanaton
Revan
Exar Kun
Darth Malgus

Ventress
Darth Maul
Darth Bane
Darth Zannah
Satele Shan
Plo Koon
Ki-Adi-Mundi
Kit Fisto

Go for it. I nominate Jacen Solo and Darth Bandon, personally.

Rough list so far.

Emperor Palpatine
Darth Vader
Anakin Skywalker
Luke Skywalker
Obi-Wan Kenobi
Boba Fett
Cad Bane
Mace Windu
Yoda
Darth Tyranus / Count Dooku
Ashoka
Quinlen Vos
Jacen Solo
Kyle Katarn
Darth Scion
Darth Nihilus
Darth Kreia
Darth Thanaton
Revan
Exar Kun
Darth Malgus

And in the absolutely not allowed list so far we have:

Anything from the Legacy Era

Still not a complete list but trying to keep it relatively small.

To add to the list.

Plo Koon
Ki-Adi-Mundi
Kit Fisto
Shaak Ti
Qui-Gon Jinn
Luminara Unduli

Jango Fett? He killed a Jedi on screen after all.

I was hesitant on Qui-Gon especially since... well, in terms of 'power' (aka strength + skill) I never considered him that high, but I'll go ahead and add him. As for Jango... a lot more debatable, but he IS fleshed out in the EU to be more so sure.

Any other additions from anyone?

Luke Skywalker.

They basically turned him into a super hero after the events of ROTJ.

How are these going to be seeded? It would kinda suck to have Palpatine/Yoda 1st round.

What about proven matchups from the movies like Kenobi/Grievous and Maul/Qui Gon?

As far as the list goes, I'm missing Darth Bane, he's definitely stronger than quite a lot of people on the current list. ;-)

Props for excluding Starkiller, he's just overpowered and feels too much like he was just made for teen fanboys to love how cool he is.
May I ask why anything from the Legacy era is forbidden? Sure there are some powerful characters there, but not stronger than Luke or Palpatine, as far as I can tell.

@Maz: Well about the proven matchups, that depends. If it's decided just by popular vote, it still can go either way. Also there are some where it was really just convenience. For example, would the Obi-Wan vs. Grievous fight have turned out the same way without that blaster being just there for Kenobi to grab? That's another debate of course, but many battles aren't that easy to call since there are so many factors that matter.

Whether or not a proven match-up is valid is only up to you, not anyone else, so vote as you please. For example, I'd vote Grievous over Obi-Wan.

Legacy era is off the list purely because I don't like it and I know several people don't know it very well to deliberate on it. I'll consider adding people from it, but the ideal is to keep the list relatively small.

As for how the matchups go... two possibilities emerge. One is a standard tourney double branch, the other is each character fights each OTHER character, which takes longer but is more accurate.

Hmm can you add Darth Zannah along with Satele Shan?

And I'd vote the same! Smile I'm glad there are some other people who understand Grievous and what he's really capable of. Too bad "The Clone Wars" pretty much ruined his reputation.

I get that. I was just asking since people like Cad Bane and Ahsoka were on the list, I figured the list isn't supposed to feature only the strongest characters.

I don't mind adding people in lower tiers, makes things interesting. It's like watching Formula One races, you're not just watching the front of the pack, the middle and back of the packs usually have more interesting battles for position, y'know? So I'm cool with adding Satele and Zannah even though I'd consider (personally) both middle or lower tier.

And Flink if you want to toss people from Legacy in I don't mind, really. I do think I've hit all the big names aside from a few of the old old sith which I'm hesitant to add since we don't know much other than legend of what they could really do.

I felt that Zannah is another good Soresu specialist aside from Obi and Darth Traya.

Plus, she's a dark sider so that's interesting.

Would Cade Skywalker be acceptable?

with his healing/destruction ability called "Dark Transfer" he could be an interesting addition to the roster.

Not as knowledgable as many on this subject but would add my vote if needed for sure. Got really into Star Wars recently but beyond kotor, bane and rots audiobook, my experience is second hand. Watched a lot of fantasy match up breakdows etc so at the least it'll be fun to see what happens and definitly fun to read the debate.

One quick question for anybody reading. Who was more powerful between pre suit and suit vader? I was of the impression that he was lower powered overall after the fight with obi wan. Burnt body meant he couldn't draw on the force as well and the loss of limbs mean less agility/maybe less light sabre form variety. Not to derail the topic but would help me decide in fantasy match ups.

I'm pretty sure pre-suit Vader was at the height of his power on Mustafar. It's the reason Palpatine wanted to replace Vader with Luke because he didn't get what he wanted - that is, Darth  Vader as he was before Mustafar. That suit is a great limitation, and as we saw in Return of the Jedi, also very vulnerable to certain Force attacks such as Lightning.

He's still very, very powerful - but not as much as he used to be. At least that's what I think, at any rate.

That's my opinion too although I've read people arguing the other side. I feel like he must have improved in certain aspects of duelling but only because of necessity. Also a more experienced combatant but overall hindered and limited because of the injuries. I think the main argument is over whether his injuries impact his force use. I'm not really a stickler for Midichlorians, but if it's linked to the cells then I'm convinced that a burnt body/damaged body will = less force sensitivity.

Makes the whole potential of the "chosen one" even more impressive imo because it was perhaps never realised. Something else you need to scratch under the surface to realise about the prequels. Makes me wonder about a peak anakin (or even alterate universe realised potential anakin) vs a less than overpowered Luke. Thanks for the answer.
